Child Champions in Jordan tell us about their country.
Jordan is a semi-arid, landlocked country in the rocky desert of the northern Arabian Peninsula, strategically located at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe. It occupies ancient land that bears the mark of many civilizations and played a prominent role in biblical history.
But the Jordanian economy is one of the smallest in the area, and a large influx of refugees, a lack of natural resources, and regional turmoil have all combined to hamper economic development. So, the country’s populace suffers from relatively high rates of unemployment and poverty. Over the last decade, approximately 14.4% of the population has lived below the national poverty line on a long-term basis, and a past recession and surrounding unrest have depressed Jordan’s GDP growth, damaging trade, industry, construction, and tourism.
Jordan is also among the most water-scarce nations on earth, making it one of the hardest places for children to thrive.
The country is also home to a large population of refugees from multiple neighboring countries in conflict who now stay in tent cities and other unstable structures. They do not have electricity or proper sanitation, and access to quality health care and stable jobs is limited.
Jordan’s children and their families would not have the chance for a better life without the help of caring friends like you.
Our work in Jordan
OneChild and its partners are there to offer children the encouragement, resources, and educational support they need to grow into successful adults and leaders. For households that do not have enough to eat, the chance to send their children to a quality place of learning means a great deal. OneChild is committed to elevating the level of education available for children in the poorest areas, meeting their physical needs through nutritional and medical support, and providing them with the tools to build a brighter future.
In addition, Child Champions in OneChild Hope Centers serve as role models and, through their actions, display God’s love in Jordan — a place where HOPE can be a difficult concept to grasp. When these children receive a welcome hug from their Child Champions or realize someone from across the globe knows them by name or feel the prayers of a person who lives so far away – it is priceless.
Although it shares in the troubles affecting its neighbors, Jordan’s commitment to maintaining peace has made it somewhat of an oasis of stability in a turbulent region. And by serving the children of Jordan today, OneChild is equipping, empowering, and preparing the generation of tomorrow to take these ideals into the future and make the world a better place.
We are accountable to the children we serve AND to our donors.
Our accountability to our donors is one of our highest priorities. Our goal is to use the funds entrusted to us as wise stewards. To do this requires continued monitoring of our fund distribution. OneChild is also a member in good standing with the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA)
