Nicaragua
2018
In Nicaragua, children attend primary school each year from February through November. It takes children an average of 11 years to complete the required 6 years of primary school. Despite the minimal schooling requirement, many still do not finish their education. Because of Nicaragua’s high poverty and unemployment landscape, children often have to drop out of school to help make ends meet. Another factor is the direct or hidden costs associated with schooling that the families simply cannot afford.
There are currently 9 active and growing Hope Centers with over 1,000 children. The projects in Nicaragua seek to provide for children in desperate need of care and attention. They act as a safe haven where children can come to have fun and play with other children in a stress-free environment. Children are offered the chance to escape the realities of poverty, if only for a few hours per week.
During their time at the center, children can come to participate in a variety of available programs and care. Medical treatment, hygiene training, and nutritional supplements are available to keep children healthy. Most importantly, each child is introduced to Christ through a program of Christian education and are given the opportunity to develop a lifelong relationship with Him.
In July 2018, you will have the opportunity to experience Nicaragua and see the transforming work of OneChild firsthand!

Excludes: Flights to/from Dallas (if not departing from Rapid City), meals in-transit, souvenirs, elective entertainment, snacks

What are the passport requirements?
A valid passport is required for travel but is not required at the time of registration. All passports MUST be valid for 6 months after the mission trip dates (in this case, February 3, 2019).
Do I need any immunizations?
OneChild does not require any immunizations; however, it is always wise to have your tetanus shot up-to-date. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (www.cdc.gov), “You should become familiar with what steps to take and who to contact in case of a medical emergency while you are traveling.” We recommend that, 6 to 8 weeks before your departure, you consult with your physician, local health department or the CDC website www.cdc.gov/travel/ for information required and recommended immunizations for the country where you will be traveling. Some vaccinations require a series of doses spaced weeks apart.
Why do I need a background check?
To ensure the safety of our children and determine eligibility to travel with OneChild, all travelers must complete a criminal background check. To process background checks, OneChild uses a third party company. After completing trip registration, you will need to submit your background check request at https://onechildmatters.quickleasepro.com/. You will be asked to pay $45 by credit card to submit your request. This $45 expense is nonrefundable. The results of your background check are confidential and all personal information is kept in a secure location.
